<strong>Welcome to the GMC Motorhome Wiki. If you're familiar with Wikipedia, this is based on the same software that Wikipedia is based on; it works just the same.*</strong>

The GMC Motorhome Wiki is intended to be an all-purpose site for accumulating the knowledge of the GMC community. If it becomes significant, and there is interest, control and ownership will be ceded to a voluntary board so that my immediate promise to maintain it can be made fully sustainable.

To contribute, you don't need an account, even. But please create one so that your work is credited.
Consult the User's Guide for information on using the wiki software.
Be good, do good, and take good care of your TZE.
NOTE: Some parts of the MediaWiki interface are hard-coded. The File Upload dialog box, for instance, carries a "This is my own work" checkbox which can't be amended. So for the purposes of this wiki, please consider that text to be: "This is my own work -or- I have permission from the original author and I'm crediting them -or- the content is reasonably expected due to age to be in the public domain." Thanks.<inputbox>

Bob Crisler: Repriced lower ball joint

The front suspension on a GMC Motorhome, like most of the front running gear, is repurposed from the Oldsmobile Unitized Power Package, designed to move the 4,841-pound Toronado around. Some components were beefed up mid-production. Lower control arms are a particular sore point, as the stock Toronado engineering was not up to the task. Later lower control arms in the Motorhome were crudely but effectively reinforced in the area of the lower ball joint; all GMC owners should include these areas as part of regular inspection.

Any suspension is composed of many skeletal metal components, all of which are connected, but isolated, using some combination of bushings, joints, and rubber. If you have any rubber components that are unchanged since yours rolled out of Truck & Coach Plant #29 in Pontiac, they need to be replaced. Note, not "they may need to be replaced." They need to be replaced.

What follows is a list of components and sourcing info necessary to replace all wear parts from the front suspension of your GMC. Source info is from a suspension rebuild in 2018. The list was compiled from the perspective of a cheapskate; some or all prices may have changed. Feel free to amend with new information. Most if not all of these parts can be sourced in a single order from any of the reputable GMC retail suppliers.

There are several versions of side windows in the GMC.

Later windows were made by Hehr, an RV window company that continues in business today. Latches may be sourced as a current Hehr product, no. H695.

Glass was PPG Sunshade Herculite, in a 50 percent transmissivity. A 35% ceramic film will result in a total transmissivity of 17.5%. Rejection of the sun's heat can be improved by using a ceramic film; these perform best for blocking heat-producing UV rays.

There are two kinds of glides that are installed in the window extrusion to provide a seal around the glass: flocked rubber and hard plastic. The hard plastic is becoming hard to source; owners have successfully replaced the hard plastic with flocked rubber.

When I bought my GMC, a 1975 Palm Beach, the Power Level system was not working. The PO had installed cutoff ball valves at each rear wheel set, and leveling was achieved with an air compressor through Schrader valves located at each airbag. It was adequate for a temporary solution, but hardly ideal.

So I decided to take things on, starting at known failure points, focusing on the compressor -- the Dana was shot -- and replacing it with a Viair 480c (that's a different story and a different post), and the Power Level valves. I used Applied GMC's rebuild kit for those valves first, and had partial success. The new O-rings did their job of sealing, as did the valve gaskets, but the Viair is a beast, and after a few days the cork-composite valve body gaskets blew out. IMO that material is just not tough enough, resilient enough, for 120 PSI.

I looked at JR Slaten's Power Level II valves, based on high-quality Swagelok parts, but before spending $500 I thought I'd take another shot at those Power Level valves, as I could easily make my own valve gaskets out of some 1/8" sheet EPDM rubber I had left over from a roofing project.

After weeks now of holding air with nary a peep out of the compressor, I can report that the EPDM gaskets have successfully fixed the original valves. The system has now held with no discernible leakdown for long enough that I can say that it does not leak.

To create the valve gaskets, download the DIY Power Level Gasket PDF to use as a guide.

Leather punches from Harbor Freight provided clean results in the process of creating the holes in the gasket. The perimeter cut can be completed after installation, with a razor blade.

Tooling marks are considerable in these valves. You want to leave some "tooth" in the surface to assist in keeping the gasket in place. But mine were excessively scored. Light sanding may be advisable. Optionally, lightly grease both sealing surfaces with Permatex 51813 Anaerobic Gasket Maker.

Torque Torx-head bolts joining the two sides of the valve snug but don't go nuts (remember, you're holding 120 PSI, so "snug" means that the rubber is compressed adequately to seal against those imperfect surfaces).

Note: Several openings in the downloadable gasket template are intentionally undersized to help the gasket retain shape and remain in place over the sealing surfaces; these openings are still larger than inside diameter of airlines, and therefore do not add any restriction.

Additionally ...

I replaced the lines between the Power Level valves and the butt connectors in the engine compartment, cutting an additional two inches or so -- carefully, with a tool specially made for cutting airlines -- from the old lines to create a new sealing surface for the O-rings in the Prestoloks. New Parker Prestolok butt connectors (32PLP-4) along with a Y-connector (362PLP-4) for the main air supply located immediately behind the valves were purchased, along with new color-coded 1120-series airline tubing from the valves to the butt connectors. PartsGopher.com was the best vendor I was able to find for this tubing in short lengths. I went with 4 feet per line, but 3 would be fine. I also changed the tubing connectors on the valve bodies themselves to Parker Prestolok, purchased at my local Parker Store; I'll edit this to include the model number.

The subject of refrigerators for the GMC is a well-traveled one. There are two basic options: absorption refrigerators, which depend on a heat source, usually propane, to initiate a liquid/gas cycle using ammonia in a spiral tube, and compression refrigerators, which use a compressor to sustain a vapor compression cycle. Typically, an absorption apparatus is considerably larger than a comparable-capacity compression system, and in an equivalently-sized compartment, that space has to come from somewhere, and that somewhere is the refrigerator box. Absorption refrigerators, as a rule, have less usable capacity than compression refrigerators.
|}
There are those who swear by their propane-fueled absorption refrigerators, and there are those who swear at them. In the best of cases, an absorption refrigerator takes the better part of a day to get to temperature, and once there it takes a while to recover if the door is opened. There is a reason we don't use absorption refrigerators in the home ... they're just not competitive with compressor-cycle fridges in any area of performance, and they are a potential fire hazard. Even moreso in a moving RV. They compromise the overall heating and cooling of the RV because they must vent to open air. In short, because the efficient 12 volt compressor refrigerator has come of age, and high-capacity LifePo4 batteries are readily available, along with affordable solar, there are few reasons left to choose an absorption fridge.

12-volt Refrigerators
Several 12-volt refrigerators are recommended by the GMC community. None fit the existing space in a standard GMC-built interior better than the Norcold N8DC, though. This model has been observed to pull a maximum of 5 amps while the compressor is in operation. Once cool, in a comfortable interior and with the old absorption air vents sealed, the N8DC can be expected to cycle about 1/4 to 1/3 of the time, consuming at most 40 amp hours per day. Vitrifrigo also makes a competitive model.

Wiring
The existing 12-volt circuit running to the refrigerator compartment of a GMC is 12 awg wire, capable of sustaining 10 amps over a 16-foot run. A Norcold N8DC pulls considerably less than that; for peace of mind, this circuit can be fused at 10 amps without issue. If you're going the route of running a dedicated inverter to power a 120 volt compressor fridge, you may find that your compartment is already supplied with a 120 volt AC circuit; a larger inverter can supply that circuit, or you can run dedicated 10 gauge 12 volt wiring to the refrigerator compartment; 25 amps can power a 300-watt AC inverter, providing enough power to run some apartment-size refrigerator models.

Sources
If you're open to scratch and dent refrigerators that may require cosmetic repair, National RV Refrigeration in Shipsewana, Indiana has a solid reputation in the GMC community.

I looked at JR Slaten's Power Level II valves, but before spending $500 I thought I'd take another shot at those Power Level valves, as I could easily make my own valve gaskets out of some 1/8" sheet EPDM rubber I had left over from a roofing project.

The system has now held with no discernible leakdown for weeks; the compressor rarely runs.

Torque Torx-head bolts joining the two sides of the valve snug but don't go nuts (remember, you're holding 120 PSI).

Note: Several openings in the downloadable gasket template are intentionally undersized to help the gasket retain shape and remain in place over the sealing surfaces; these openings are still larger than inside diameter of airlines, and therefore do not add any restriction.

Torque Torx-head bolts joining the two sides of the valve snug but don't go nuts (remember, you're holding up 120 PSI).

Several openings in the downloadable gasket template are intentionally undersized to help the gasket retain shape and remain in place over the sealing surfaces; these openings are still larger than inside diameter of airlines, and therefore do not add any restriction.
